Programs for Educators of Ethiopian Descent

“Tesfa” (Hope in Amharic)

A program aimed for improving the integration of teachers of Ethiopian descent in Israel’s education system. It is part of a broader national program aimed for improving the integration of Ethiopians into Israeli society in general, and is operated as a partnership between The MOFET Institute, Merchavim Institute, and the Ministry of Education

The program seeks to change perceptions and shape attitudes towards racism, diversity, and stereotypes; to advance the development of professional identity while maintaining the ‘others’ culture and diversity and developing tolerance towards it; to define a policy to be implemented in Israeli Teacher training system.

An accompanying research reveals that in the last 6 years, there has been significant increase in the number of teachers of Ethiopian descent in the system alongside a reduction in the number of dropouts.

In the past 3 years, our work has expanded its target, transferring from a program designed solely for Ethiopians, to a general program dealing with Multiculturalism and Social Justice.
